Alhamdulillah (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ) — "All praise belongs to Allah" — is described by the Prophet ﷺ as filling the scales of good deeds. Explore its deep meaning and how to make it a living attitude, not just a phrase.
The Meaning of Alhamdulillah
Alhamdulillah (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ) consists of: Al (the definite article), hamd (praise that combines gratitude and love), and lillah (belonging to Allah). Together it means all praise — in its entirety, unconditionally — belongs exclusively to Allah. It opens the Quran in the very first verse of Surah Al-Fatiha.
It Fills the Scales
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Subhan Allah fills half the scales, and Alhamdulillah fills them" (Muslim). This extraordinary virtue makes Alhamdulillah one of the most weight-bearing phrases a Muslim can utter. Saying it upon waking, after sneezing, and after every blessing is Sunnah.
Living Alhamdulillah as an Attitude
Beyond verbal recitation, Alhamdulillah is an attitude of radical gratitude. The Quran states: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you" (14:7). Scholars explain that the heart's gratitude, expressed through the tongue and limbs, is the complete form of hamd that Allah loves.
