Morning Adhkar — The Complete Sunnah List

Morning Adhkar — The Complete Sunnah List

Morning adhkar (أذكار الصباح) are the remembrances the Prophet ﷺ taught to be recited between Fajr and sunrise. They place the entire day under the protection of Allah and begin it in gratitude and awareness of Him.
Below is the full morning sequence from Hisnul Muslim (Fortress of the Muslim) — each dhikr with its Arabic text, transliteration, English meaning, and the recommended number of repetitions.

1. Ayat al-Kursi

Allaahu laa ilaaha illaa huwal-hayyul-qayyoom. Laa ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa laa nawm. Lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-ard. Man thal-lathee yashfa'u 'indahu illaa bi'ithnih. Wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal-ard. Wa laa ya'ooduhu hifthuhumaa. Wa huwal-'aliyyul-'atheem.
Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should morning adhkar be recited?

The preferred time is after Fajr prayer until sunrise. If missed, many scholars allow reciting them until mid-morning (Duha). Consistency matters more than perfection — recite what you can, when you can.

How long do morning adhkar take?

The full Hisnul Muslim morning sequence takes about 10-15 minutes. If pressed for time, prioritise Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls, and Sayyid al-Istighfar, which carry the strongest authentic virtues.

Can I read morning adhkar in English?

The Arabic wording carries the Sunnah reward, but reading the translation alongside builds understanding and presence of heart. Many Muslims recite the Arabic while reviewing the English meaning until the phrases become familiar.
