Evening Adhkar — The Complete Sunnah List

Evening Adhkar — The Complete Sunnah List

Evening adhkar (أذكار المساء) are recited between Asr and Maghrib (and remain valid into the night). The Prophet ﷺ prescribed them as a shield against harm, the evil eye, and shaytan through the hours of darkness.
This is the full evening sequence from Hisnul Muslim — Arabic, transliteration, English meaning, and the recommended count for each remembrance.

1. Ayat al-Kursi

Allaahu laa ilaaha illaa huwal-hayyul-qayyoom. Laa ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa laa nawm. Lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-ard. Man thal-lathee yashfa'u 'indahu illaa bi'ithnih. Wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal-ard. Wa laa ya'ooduhu hifthuhumaa. Wa huwal-'aliyyul-'atheem.
Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do evening adhkar start?

The window opens after Asr prayer and extends to Maghrib; reciting after Maghrib or before sleep is also valid according to many scholars. The key is making them a fixed daily appointment.

Are evening adhkar different from bedtime adhkar?

Yes. Evening adhkar mark the end of the day (after Asr), while bedtime adhkar — such as Surah Al-Mulk, the tasbih of Fatimah, and "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya" — are recited when lying down to sleep.
